How Many Nonprofits Are in Kalamazoo County? A Sector-by-Sector Breakdown

Kalamazoo County is home to 1,592 registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations — a civil society infrastructure that spans food banks and symphony orchestras, free health clinics and environmental land trusts. But aggregate counts only tell part of the story. Where exactly is that capacity concentrated, and where are the gaps?

Using data from the ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer, which draws directly from the IRS Business Master File, Michigan Signals analyzed every active 501(c)(3) registered in Kalamazoo County and classified each one by its National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE) sector code.

The Sector Breakdown

Kalamazoo County's 1,592 registered nonprofits break down across ten NTEE sectors:

• Human Services — 463 orgs (29%): The largest category. Food pantries, domestic violence shelters, youth programs, workforce development, housing assistance, and immigrant services.
• Public, Societal Benefit — 184 orgs (12%): Civil rights organizations, community foundations, neighborhood associations, advocacy groups, and philanthropy infrastructure including the Kalamazoo Community Foundation.
• Education — 181 orgs (11%): Private schools, tutoring programs, libraries, alumni associations, and research institutions. Western Michigan University's affiliated nonprofits contribute meaningfully here.
• Arts, Culture & Humanities — 116 orgs (7%): Orchestras, theater companies, community galleries, and arts education programs.
• Religion Related — 114 orgs (7%): Houses of worship and faith-affiliated charitable organizations with formal 501(c)(3) status.
• Health — 88 orgs (6%): Hospitals, community health centers, mental health organizations, and public health advocacy groups.
• Environment & Animals — 56 orgs (4%): Land trusts, conservation groups, wildlife rehabilitation organizations, and animal shelters.
• International, Foreign Affairs — 13 orgs (1%): Organizations with internationally focused missions.
• Mutual/Membership Benefit — 2 orgs (<1%): Member-serving organizations with formal charitable status.
• Unassigned / No NTEE Code — 375 orgs (24%): Organizations registered before NTEE codes became standard, or newer organizations awaiting classification.

What "Public, Societal Benefit" Actually Means

This NTEE category (codes R through W) encompasses civil rights organizations, community foundations, advocacy groups, neighborhood associations, and philanthropy infrastructure. High counts here indicate a mature, self-sustaining philanthropic ecosystem — organizations that fund and support other nonprofits. The Kalamazoo Community Foundation, for instance, falls here.

What This Data Doesn't Show

One important limitation: this count excludes the smallest nonprofits. Organizations with annual gross receipts under $50,000 file a Form 990-N rather than a full 990, and these filers do not appear in ProPublica's database.
